Community Snapshot - At a recent meeting, selectmen shot down a restaurant's plans to install two video games, fretted about the effect of state budget struggles on their community, and thanked residents for volunteer efforts.
It was the agenda of a typical small community where volunteerism and a close watch on the quality of life are standard. This Worcester County town is a mixture of a bedroom community and suburban industrial center for Worcester and Boston due to major interstates that pass through.
"Our location is phenomenal," said town coordinator Henry Danis. He said the town supports business - 40 percent of the land is commercial - and has sewer and water systems covering more than 85 percent of the community.
Schools recently received a $68 million upgrade. Westborough "has an absolutely great school system," Danis said.
Traffic congestion, particularly downtown, is a chronic problem that won't be easily solved any time soon, Danis said.
The headwaters of the Assabet and Sudbury rivers are here, and green space is in nearly every corner of the 21 square mile town. -The Boston Globe
